How to Answer “Why This Firm?”
The strongest answers combine specific firm evidence with a personal recruiting thesis. The goal is not to praise the firm—it is to show that you understand the platform and have made a considered choice.
Build the answer from three pieces
Start with what you want from investment banking, then identify two features of the firm that support that goal, and close with evidence from your research or conversations. Useful evidence includes a recent transaction, a group’s positioning, senior banker involvement, an internship structure, or a conversation that changed your view. Keep the answer concise enough that the interviewer can choose where to follow up.
Avoid answers that could fit every bank
Prestige, culture, lean teams, and strong deal flow are not differentiators by themselves. If you use one, explain what you observed and why it matters to you. Avoid unsupported superlatives and do not claim a culture fit based only on a website.
